Stalled Storms and Flooding Crisis Across Thailand – Disaster Warning 2026
SO OK TRADING | September 27, 2026

Introduction
Thailand is currently facing severe heavy rainfall and widespread flooding caused by a strong low-pressure system stalled over the lower central region, including Bangkok and its metropolitan area. As of September 27, 2026, more than 21 provinces nationwide have already been affected. Bangkok is preparing to declare all 50 districts as disaster zones after continuous rainfall has overwhelmed the city’s drainage capacity.

Although this situation is not as prolonged or devastating as the Great Flood of 2011, it has already caused widespread impacts on daily life, the economy, and transportation. Particularly, Bangkok, the central region, the eastern provinces, and the lower northeastern region are now under the highest level of alert.

Current Situation
Bangkok and Metropolitan Area

Rainfall exceeded 200 mm, with Bang Na recording 206.6 mm.
More than 13 major roads, including Phahonyothin, Vibhavadi Rangsit, Chaeng Watthana, and Srinakarin, are flooded and impassable for small vehicles.
Schools closed, government officials instructed to work from home, and 233 temporary shelters established for evacuees.
Central and Western Regions

High-risk provinces: Ratchaburi, Kanchanaburi, Suphanburi, Nakhon Sawan, and Uthai Thani.
Main risks: flash floods, landslides, and inundation in low-lying areas.
Chao Phraya Dam increasing discharge to handle upstream water inflows.
Eastern Region

Sa Kaeo: Six districts flooded, reservoirs exceeding 121% capacity.
Prachinburi: Old market area in Kabin Buri flooded 30–50 cm.
Chachoengsao: Tha Takiap and Ratchasan districts declared watch zones.
Bangkok East: Nong Chok, Khan Na Yao, and Suan Luang districts declared disaster zones.
Transportation

Highways 304 and 359 submerged and impassable.
Eastern railway: 8 train services suspended.
Bus routes: 5 services to Sa Kaeo and Prachinburi halted.
Lower Northeastern Region

Nakhon Ratchasima (Pak Chong): Flash floods from Khao Yai inundated economic zones, water levels up to 50 cm.
Buriram: Sudden flooding in Ta Pek early morning.
Chaiyaphum: Flash floods from Phu Khieo cut off several roads.

Outlook and Future Direction
Meteorological Department forecasts stalled storms shifting toward the central region, reducing rainfall in Bangkok to moderate levels, but western and eastern provinces remain at risk.
Chao Phraya River basin (Chainat, Singburi, Ang Thong) must prepare for rising water levels due to dam discharge.
Lower northeastern provinces (Chaiyaphum, Nakhon Ratchasima, Buriram) remain at risk of flash floods and inundation over the next 1–2 days.
Experts confirm that the 2026 floods are not as severe as the 2011 Great Flood, but localized areas such as Nong Chok, Lat Krabang, Sa Kaeo, and Prachinburi may experience more intense impacts due to different disaster patterns.

Conclusion
The 2026 flood crisis is a nationwide disaster affecting Bangkok, the central region, the east, and the lower northeast. While not as catastrophic as the 2011 Great Flood, it has already caused significant disruption to daily life, transportation, and the economy. Residents in high-risk areas should prepare for evacuation, move belongings to higher ground, and closely follow official announcements to ensure safety and minimize damage.
