Zinc Ingot: Overview of the Modern Metal Industry
SO OK TRADING | October 12, 2026

1. Types of Zinc Ingots
By Purity Grades (ASTM B6 / ISO 752) Zinc ingots are classified by purity, which directly affects their quality and industrial applications:

Special High Grade (SHG) – ≥ 99.995% Highest purity, used in precision coating, electronics, batteries, and premium alloys.
High Grade (HG) – ≥ 99.90–99.95% Commonly used for zinc oxide production and general anti-corrosion coating.
Continuous Galvanizing Grade (CGG) – Al 0.2–1.1% Ideal for continuous galvanizing lines, enhancing adhesion and coating thickness control.
Intermediate Grade (IG) – ≥ 99.5% Applied in chemical industries and general alloys.
Prime Western (PW/PWG) – ~98.5% Contains impurities such as Pb and Cd, suitable for cost-effective hot-dip galvanizing.
LME Grade – ≥ 99.995% International standard for trading on the London Metal Exchange.
By Industrial Application

Pure Zinc Ingot → Galvanizing, chemical production.
Zinc Alloy Ingot (Zamak 3, 5) → Contains Al, Mg, Cu; used in high-pressure die-casting for automotive and electronics.
Zinc Anode → Sacrificial anode for corrosion protection in ships, pipelines, and underwater steel structures.

2. International Standards
Zinc Ingots Standards ASTM B6 (USA), ISO 752 (International), EN 1179 (Europe), GB/T 470 (China), JIS H2107 (Japan)

Zinc Coating Standards

Hot-Dip Galvanizing → ASTM A123, ASTM A153, ISO 1461
Electroplated Zinc → ASTM B633, ISO 2081
These standards regulate purity, thickness, and adhesion, ensuring quality and durability against corrosion.

3. Global Zinc Consumption
Galvanizing → 55%
Die-Casting → 15%
Brass & Bronze → 12%
Chemicals / Zinc Oxide → 9%
Semi-Manufactures → 6%
Others (Batteries / Pharmaceuticals) → 3%

4. Zinc Demand Trends in Thailand
⚡ EV Industry

Thailand is emerging as the ASEAN EV hub.
Rising demand for galvanized steel and zinc alloy components.
Research and development of safe, recyclable zinc-ion batteries.
☀️ Renewable Energy

Solar farms and rooftop structures require hot-dip galvanizing (ASTM A123 / ISO 1461).
Increasing adoption of ZAM steel (Zn-Al-Mg) with superior resistance to salt spray and chemicals.

5. Major Global Exporters
Zinc Ores & Concentrates Peru (~15.1%), Australia (~13%), USA (~10.1%), Bolivia (~9.7%), Mexico (~5.3%)

Refined Zinc Metal/Ingot China, South Korea, Canada, India are key producers.

✨ Summary
Zinc ingot is a strategic metal powering global industries, from anti-corrosion steel to clean technologies. Thailand is transitioning from construction-driven demand to EV and renewable energy, driving growth in high-purity zinc and advanced alloys. Zinc will remain at the heart of the green economy, enabling sustainable development worldwide.
